OUR STORY

Our “Lil’ Duck” Jessica

Our daughter, Jessica, was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer when she was 19 years old. Over the course of a week, she went from living a normal teenage life to starting chemotherapy. She spent 139 days of the next six months in the hospital, 39 of which were in the ICU. During this time, her mother, Debey, was desperate to learn everything she could about how the body heals itself. She spent hours researching and asking anyone she could about how and why the body heals itself. Debey was so determined, she went back to school and spent many long hours researching and studying to become a Functional Nutritionist. Earning her degree with a focus on the Microbiota (the gut) and Epigenetics (the science of gene expression), Debey soon discovered that we can change our gene expression by implementing simple lifestyle changes.

One of Debey’s most meaningful discoveries was how fermented foods and beverages (like kombucha) could effectively boost the immune system and promote natural healing within the body. She quickly set out to make the healing, probiotic drink for herself and her daughter, carefully brewing it so that it would have as many nutrients as possible without the sugar, caffeine, or vinegar taste. Soon, friends and family from all over South Carolina were clamoring at the chance to taste Debey’s delicious kombucha.

In addition to drinking kombucha regularly, Jessica radically transformed her lifestyle, including changes to her diet, exercise, relaxation, fresh air, sunshine, grounding, healing herbs, and much more. Given just six weeks to live, Jessica continued to give her body what it needed to heal, and nine months after ceasing treatments she was doing so well that she was able to move back out on her own with her daughter. After making the necessary changes to her lifestyle and listening to what her body needed, Jessica went from being riddled with cancer throughout her spine, breasts, liver, kidney, lungs, and brain, to having a no-active cancer status at the end of nine months. Jessica’s story is what inspires us to keep going and keep educating others about the powerful impact that small lifestyle changes can make. In every bottle of our kombucha, we want others to see that as long as you’re breathing, as long as you’re listening to your body, there’s hope!

In my research, I found that boosting the immune system with fermented foods like kombucha was a key component to healing. With necessity being the mother of invention, I set out to make the healing probiotic, antioxidant drink for myself and my daughter, carefully brewing it so that it would have as many nutrients as possible without the sugar and caffeine. Jessica followed a regimen that included changes to her diet, exercise, relaxation, fresh air, sunshine, grounding, healing herbs and other lifestyle changes. Although her doctors had only given her six weeks to live, she continued to give her body what it needed to heal and nine months after they ceased treatments she was doing so well Jessica moved back out on her own with her daughter.
